KUALA KANGSAR: Two army personnel died while two others were seriously injured after their armoured fighting vehicle hit a divider and crashed on its side at the North South Expressway.
The 6.40pm incident took place at Km 232.5 southbound of the Expressway.
The two army personnel killed were identified as Sgt Bayong Anak Burma and Cpl Cik Mohamad Fatonah Che Ismail.
Bayong was killed on the spot while Cik Mohamad died while being treated at Kuala Kangsar Hospital.
Kuala Kangsar police spokesman said the two other personnel in the vehicle identified as Cpl Mohd Sarifudin Abdullah and Lance Cpl Fredi Anak Barnabas are being treated at the hospital.
An eye witness, Abd Momin Khushairy of the Civil Defence Department said he was on his way back to Kuala Kangsar after sending two accident victims to Taiping Hospital when he saw the incident.
"The vehicle hit the divider and a wheel flew to the other side of the highway," he said.
Abd Momin, who was in the JPAM van with three other personnel, said they immediately stopped their vehicle to render assistance.
"When I reached the area, I saw two of the victims on the road while two others were trapped inside," he said.
With the assistance of other army personnel, the two trapped personnel were saved from the vehicle.
It is learnt that the armoured fighting vehicle was part of a convoy from Sungai Petani heading to Gemas, Negri Sembilan for training.
